chapter 1 – Stocks series

🌍 The Beginning of Wealth – Before Stocks Existed

Long before stock exchanges, long before Wall Street, long before computers and mobile trading apps, humans were already thinking about one simple thing:

How to create wealth.

Money did not exist.

Shares did not exist.

Companies did not exist.

But trade existed.

And trade is the real grandfather of the stock market.

If you want to understand today’s global markets — America, India, London, Dubai, Japan, crypto — you must go back thousands of years.

Because the stock market did not suddenly appear.

It slowly evolved from human survival.

🪨 Barter System – The First “Market” in History

Around 10,000 years ago…

Humans were farmers and hunters.

There was:

  • no currency
  • no banks
  • no prices
  • no shares

If someone had wheat

and another had milk

They simply exchanged.

This was called:

👉 Barter System

Example:

  • 5 kg rice = 1 goat
  • milk = vegetables
  • tools = grains

This was the first form of a “market”.

But it had big problems:

❌ No fixed value

❌ Hard to store wealth

❌ Not easy for large trade

So people needed something better.

👑 Kings & Kingdoms – Birth of Money

Around 3000–2000 BCE

Big civilizations grew:

  • Mesopotamia
  • Egypt
  • Indus Valley
  • China

Kings realized something important:

👉 Trade = power

👉 Wealth = strong army

👉 Strong army = bigger kingdom

So they created:

Coins

Made from:

  • gold
  • silver
  • copper

Now instead of:

“1 cow for wheat”

It became:

“10 silver coins for wheat”

This was the first financial revolution in human history.

Money made:

✅ trade faster

✅ savings possible

✅ prices fixed

✅ businesses born

Without coins…

Stock markets would never exist.

🏛️ First Business Partnerships (Very Important)

Here is where things get interesting…

Around 1000 BCE – 500 BCE

Merchants wanted to do big trade journeys:

Example:

  • India → Arabia
  • China → Rome
  • Silk Road trade

But trade was risky:

⚠️ Pirates

⚠️ Storms

⚠️ Robbers

⚠️ Ships sinking

If one merchant invested alone, he could lose everything.

So they invented something genius:

👉 Partnership investing

5 merchants together:

  • each invest 100 gold coins
  • total 500 coins
  • profit shared equally

This is VERY important.

Because…

👉 This is the FIRST IDEA of “shares”

They didn’t call it stock…

But it was exactly the same concept.

Risk sharing + profit sharing = early stocks

🚢 Roman Empire – Early Investment Model

Romans created something very close to modern corporations.

They had:

“Societates”

These were business groups where:

  • many investors joined
  • each owned a portion
  • profits divided

People could even:

👉 sell their ownership to others

Sound familiar?

YES.

That’s literally stock trading.

Some historians call this:

👉 “The world’s first proto-stock market”

So even 2000 years ago…

Humans were already trading ownership.

🌏 How All Countries Connected Through Trade

This is where globalization started.

Routes like:

  • Silk Road (China → Europe)
  • Spice Route (India → Middle East)
  • Sea trade (Africa → Asia)

Connected:

India

China

Rome

Arabia

Europe

Money started flowing between countries.

Currencies exchanged.

Investments increased.

Risk increased.

Trade became international.

And this international trade later created:

👉 Global stock markets

So today when:

US market falls → India falls

It’s not new.

Even ancient kingdoms were connected the same way.

🏦 Banking System Birth

Around 1400–1500 (Italy)

Cities like:

  • Venice
  • Florence
  • Genoa

Created first banks.

Banks allowed:

  • deposits
  • loans
  • investments

Merchants borrowed money to fund trade.

More trade → more profit → more investors

This slowly created:

👉 Capital markets

Capital = money used to grow business

Stock markets are nothing but:

👉 capital markets for companies

🌊 The Big Change Was Coming…

By 1500s:

World had:

✅ money

✅ banks

✅ partnerships

✅ international trade

✅ risk sharing

Only ONE thing missing:

👉 Official shares trading market

And that came next…

When huge trading companies like:

🔥 East India Company

🔥 Dutch VOC

Started selling shares to the public.

And this changed the world forever.
